Biographical Information: Fred was the fifth of six children born to George and Gertrude Abbott of Canton, Cardiff. As a child, Fred attended Severn Road School in Cardiff. He played trumpet and horn and was a member of the Boys Brigade. He was also a chorister at St. Catherines Anglican Church.

Though listed as a "Marine", Fred actually served aboard Hood as a "Royal Marine Band" musician. Fred's action station at the time of Hood's sinking was the 15" Transmitting Station. He was 18 at the time of his loss.
