JOHN WESLEY JONES

He joined the crew of the cruiser H.M.S. London in January 1932. The following June he signed on for a term of 12 years service. During his time in the London he was promoted to Ordinary Seaman (30 November 1933). He also won a silver trophy skull for helping win the Young Seaman's Cutter race in the 1933 Mediterranean Fleet Cruiser Regatta. He served in the London until April 1934.
He went on to serve in the following ships/establishments:
H.M.S. Victory, RN Barracks Portsmouth (17/04/34 to 04/09/34), H.M.S. Excellent Gunnery School & the destroyer H.M.S. Restless (05/09/34 to 22/04/35), H.M.S. Victory & the destroyer H.M.S. Forester (23/04/35 to 31/03/36), H.M.S. St Angelo, Malta & H.M.S. Forester (01/04/36 to 12/0/36), H.M.S. Victory & H.M.S. Forester (13/07/36 to 27/04/37) and H.M.S. Excellent (28/04/37 to 27/08/37). He then was assigned to H.M.S. Vernon, Torpedo School & the destroyer H.M.S. Winchester (28/08/37 to 14/10/38). He was promoted to Acting Leading Seaman during this timeframe.
He then went on to serve at H.M.S. Excellent (15/10/38 to 11/01/39) where he was promoted to Leading Seaman in December 1938. This was followed by a posting to the battleship H.M.S. Ramillies (12/01/39 to 31/12/40) where he was promoted to Acting Petty Officer in May 1939 and Petty Officer the following May. He returned to H.M.S. Victory (01/01/41 to 10/01/41) and then H.M.S. Excellent (11/01/41 to 07/03/41) and was finally posted to the battle cruiser Hood in March 1941. He was serving aboard Hood as a gunnery Petty Officer.
He was 26 years old at the time of his loss in Hood's sinking.
