Biographical Information: Stanley was born in London to parents Albert Thomas Matthews and Violet Matthews. He had one brother and one sister. The family later resided at 7 St John's Road, Bathwick, Bath, Somerset.
Stanley was a keen sportsman and excelled at cricket, football, hockey and roller skating. He followed his father's footsteps and served in the armed forces. He was educated at the Royal Naval College in Greenwich and entered the Navy as an Ordinary Seaman. He was trained in the speciality of telegraphy.
Stanley was serving in Hood at the time of his father's death in October 1940, but due to operational requirements, was unable to come home. Tragedy struck his family once more in May 1941, when Stanley was lost in the sinking of Hood. He was 22 years old at the time of his loss. We have no additional information.
