Biographical Information: Alexander was born on 05 February 1919 in West Hartlepool, County Durham to Mr. and Mrs. S.W. Smith of 5 Hutton Avenue, West Hartlepool. Note- contemporary newspaper records indicate that his middle name may have been "Gill".

Alexander was an old boy of Galley’s Field School.. Prior to volunteering for the Navy in July 1939, he worked for his father as a fish retailer in Lothian Road. He was 22 years old at the time of his loss. We have no additional information.
